“Finding direction after the Defence Force”
Serving in the military was always a goal for James and after eleven years of service, he started his transition process in January 2017. Despite his ups and downs during his transition into the management consulting industry, James hopes that by sharing his transition he can help other veterans have a smoother transition process.
James joined the army as soon as he graduated high school. He always knew that he wanted to serve in the Defence Force because of his family background. James’ father served in the army and his mother served in the Air Force and this motivated James to join the army. James worked his way to become an Infantry Captain in the army before making his transition earlier this year.
James’ transition process varied at times, and he encountered some challenges along the way. James credits an article by WithYouWithMe Co-Founder and CEO Tom Moore, which detailed his own transition experience from the Defence Force to industry, for helping motivate him and start him on the right path towards a meaningful career.
James registered as a WithYouWithMe mentee and today is a management consultant working on defence contracts at KPMG. He shares with those currently transitioning from the Defence Force that “it will take time to figure out exactly what you want to do. However, you need to have a good idea of the general area you want to go into so you have a place to start”.
