I’m keen to learn new skills and/or progress my in-service trade/skills to the next level. I want to contribute and build a career in a new field with diverse work opportunities all around Australia. Critical in-service areas are Electrical Technician and Marine Technician Navy, RAAF Communications Electrical Technicians, Aviation technicians and Army Engineers, RAEME and Fuel Operators. Entry level labourer positions

(Usually linked to a skilled traineeship) PTE – CPL equivalent; no previous experience required; hardworking and a quick learner.

Supervisor or experienced positons

PTE – WO2 equivalent with previous plant, truck or labourer tickets, certificate level courses in construction, plant, rail, electrical or similar.

CPL – Officer equivalent with diploma of project manager minimum, WHS certificate level, relevant industry tickets (truck, plant, forklift etc).

REGISTER
IN DEMAND: RAIL TECHNICIANS (SIGNAL)

As a Signalling Technician, you will be responsible for providing expertise at all stages of the product life cycle. You will be required to work both day and night shifts. There will be a strong focus on your ongoing development. Duties include:

  • Installing signals, cabling, and wiring.
  • Performing maintenance work.
  • Managing testing and commissioning.

Desired Skills:

  • Cert III Electrical (potentially Class A License).
  • Cert IV in Electrical Rail Signalling (can be on the job while working).
  • Previous experience working as a Signal Technician.
  • Experience with signalling testing and commissioning desirable.
  • A Signalling Statement of Competency would be advantageous.

Potential Income: $60,000 – $100,000 (depending on workplace and experience).

Job Stability: High.

Barriers to Entry: Medium (entry to paid full time traineeship barriers low).

Current Employability: High.

Future Employability: Very High.

IN DEMAND: HFC TECHNICIANS

HFC is the Hybrid Fibre Coaxial  component of telecommunications. As a technician you will be installing Fibre cabling to business and houses from street or suburb nodes. This includes laying cable, hauling cable through existing infrastructure, connecting the premise and relevant testing and auditing of work.

You can work as a sub-contractor and grow your own business or as an employee.

IN DEMAND: PLANT OPERATORS

Plant Operators will work on construction projects, road infrastructure projects, mining sites and in some cases rail infrastructure sites. As a specialist member of the team, you will provide capability on particular plant equipment specific to the role (Skid Steer, water trucks, bobcat, road profiling for example). You will be employed in broader labouring roles dependent on the project but used as an expert on plant.

Opportunities to work full time for companies or as a labourer through labour hire companies.

Desired Skills

  • Plant tickets of any kind (Skid steer, bob cat, front end loader, HR or MR, fork lift, etc)
  • White card
  • WHS experience
  • Potentially traffic management
  • First aid

Potential Income: $60,000 – $90,000 (depending on workplace and experience) or $35 – $60/hour

IN DEMAND: MINING MACHINE OPERATORS

As a Machine Operator, you can be employed on a number of mine sites Fly-In-Fly-Out (FIFO) around Australia. Mining Machine Operators spend hours in the same position laying or sitting while operating heavy machinery using buttons and levers. They require specialised knowledge in mining machine operations and drilling techniques. Because they work together with a team of mining specialists operating heavy machinery hundreds of feet underground, they must be great team players, possess good judgment and general good health.

Typical duties include:

  • Determine locations, boundaries and depths of holes or channels to be cut.
  • Drive machines into position at working faces.
  • Move controls to start and regulate movement of conveyors, and to start and position drill cutters or torches.
  • Move levers to raise and lower hydraulic safety bars that support roofs above machines until other workers complete their framing.
  • Observe and listen to equipment operation to detect binding or stoppage of tools and other equipment malfunctions.

Desired skills – dependent on position, usually relevant license or ticket on machinery to be used (dump truck for example), plus medical check and drug test.

Potential Income: FIFO Entry level $250 – 350/day (2 in 1, 3 in 1 or 4 in 2 rotations)

IN DEMAND: CONSTRUCTION SKILLED LABOURERS

As a Skilled Labourer, you will be trained by WYWM or have previous skills and experience in basic construction, hand and power tools, small plant, concreting, traffic management, etc. You might possess an MR, forklift or similar license. A broad range of roles exist depending on your previous experience and qualifications. Plenty of opportunity to learn new skills on the job and become more employable over time. 

Typical duties include:

  • General labourer work on site, assisting qualified trades in performing their roles.
  • Work site preparation and clean up.
  • Painting, cutting, drilling, scaffolding, rubble removal and vehicle control.
  • Other general hand roles dependent on work site. 

Potential Income: Ranging from $30/h – $50/h depending on company and experience. 

Job Stability: Medium.

Barriers to Entry: Low.

Current Employability: High.

Future Employability: High.

Locations: All major capital cities and surrounding suburbs. Some FIFO work on large infrastructure builds. 

Companies: All major development and construction companies.
